Name?

I realize Geneviève is a mouthful, so feel free to call me “Gen”!

lawyer Gen Boulay

Counsel Genevieve Boulay

Where did you grow up?

I grew up and lived in the West Island of Montreal (anglophone area of Quebec on the land of the St. Lawrence Iroquoians, Mohawk, Huron-Wendat and Haudenosaunee) until I moved to Ottawa for law school. I spent summers with my family at our cottage in northern New Brunswick, near Campbelltown (on the land of the Wabanaki Confederacy and Mi’kmaq). I am of French Canadian/Acadian origin but grew up speaking English, and am now working on re-acquiring my fluency in French.

What is your favourite food?

I will say dark chocolate, as that is my favourite treat while travelling to meet with clients.

Describe a perfect Saturday.

The day would start when I would wake up early to meditate and work out before going out for brunch. The rest of the day would ideally be spent on a sunny beach somewhere.

What do you love about your job?

Meaningful, interesting and diverse work, our amazing clients and colleagues. The chance to constantly work on novel legal issues that are socially significant and advance reconciliation – it’s all very exciting stuff. I also consider myself extremely lucky for the incredible mentorship and learning opportunities I have had ever since I joined the firm as an articling student years ago.

What areas of law are you passionate about?

I am passionate about equality rights, collective rights, and human rights. I want to be part of creating a socially just world where everyone is respected, included, safe and well. Two great quotes:

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality.” – Desmond Tutu

“If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.” – Lilla Watson
